4th edition. xviii,1l.,468pp. Octavo in original gilt decorated off-white cloth with gilt top edge, others uncut, beige patterned endpapers and gilt lettered green leather spine label. Twenty-three wood engraved plates (including frontispiece) and illustrations in text, and five folding maps. Some minor foxing to verso of front free endpaper and adjacent leaf and short tear in margin of one map. very good Neate W65. One of the classics of mountaineering literature that went through many editions. Recounts the story of the first ascent of the Matterhorn on which four members of the team were lost on the descent.
