About this Item
Very large (44x35 cm.) 1/2 leather album of printing samples. Spine, joints and leather on the binding are scuffed and well worn, but still fully intact and sound. 107 pages (though many of the left-hand pages are not utilized). The firs 55 pages contain examples of individual numbers and letters, the next 44 pages whole alphabets, and the last 8 pages an eclectic assortment of examples cut from periodicals or letterheads. Each page is titled in calligraphy at the top. While this was clearly a labor of love of the compiler, who found hundreds of sample letters and had a large, heavy volume made to display them, there is no identification of that compiler. While the assortment of examples, particularly in the last section, leads to the conclusion that this was compiled in the United States, there are many French and German samples. This is a most unusual and striking homemade homage to the wide variety of fonts, typefaces, and printing art available late in the 19th century. Seller Inventory # b00401
