Add to basketRed screw bound scrapbook binding, 15.5 x 12.75", containing 69 pasted in ephemeral items as well as 17 photographs and numerous newspaper and newsletter clippings. A scrapbook documenting the activities of the Long Beach, California chapter of Zonta International between 1959 and 1968. Zonta was founded in 1919 "as a service organization of executive women working to improve the status of women worldwide" (Zonta.org). The club catered to working women and business owners, and is still in existence today. This meticulously assembled scrapbook is organized by year, and contains numerous newspaper clippings, as well as clippings from the chapter newsletter, documenting the activities of the Long Beach chapter. These are arranged alongside ephemera, including several chapter directories as well as numerous event programs and invitations. These include programs from events such as workshops and officer installations, programs from events held in conjunction with neighboring Zonta chapters, like the charter dinner for the Zonta Club of Compton-Lynwood, and programs from regional and state level Zonta conventions. There are also 17 photographs (several 8 x 10") of chapter events, as well as several letters, including a letter from the chapter president regarding fundraising, and a letter from the President of the London Zonta club, the latter of which is accompanied by two 1965 newsletters from that club. Another group of clippings and ephemera relates to the 1965 death of Joan Merriam Smith, a Long Beach Zonta member and aviatrix who was the second woman to fly solo around the world, after Amelia Earhart, another famous Zonta member. This includes a memorial poem, a funeral program, and a letter from Smith's husband noting that "She has proven without qualification women's equality in the demanding and exacting profession of flying." Contents in very good condition, edges of album leaves have been reinforced with old tape, front hinge of binding cracked.
