Synopsis

The Scripture Doctrine Of Predestination Stated And Explained: Two Discourses Preached Before The University Of Oxford, At St. Mary's, On Sunday, June 18. 1758. By William Parker. This work presents a careful theological examination of the doctrine of predestination, addressing widespread objections and misinterpretations of Paul’s writings, particularly in Romans. Parker argues against schemes of absolute election or reprobation, defending instead a view that predestination concerns God’s gracious plan to call and justify a community of believers, while leaving room for human free will, virtue, and obedience. He analyzes the key terms—foreknowledge, calling, justification, and glorification—within their biblical context and the wider arc of the apostle’s argument, showing that Paul’s assurances of assurance to the elect do not remove moral responsibility or the possibility of falling from grace. The reader is walked through St. Paul’s argument in Romans 8 and related passages, and through the church’s own articles, to illustrate a balanced doctrine compatible with gospel mercy and human accountability. Parker emphasizes perseverance, the necessity of faith and good works, and warns against speculative fears of unconditional reprobation. The discourse invites students and clergy to ground confidence in the divine promises while living a godly life.
