A Scripture Help : Designed to Assist in Reading the Bible, Profitably: Volume 12

A Scripture Help : Designed To Assist In Reading The Bible, Profitably by Edward Henry Bickersteth. This 1840s devotional work offers a practical program for daily family worship. It presents a comprehensive series of family prayers organized into an eight-week course, with morning and evening prayers for each day, and extended seasonal and occasional prayers for Sundays, Advent, Lent, Easter, Whitsun, and Saints’ Days. Prefatory notes warn against formality and encourage heartfelt worship anchored in Scripture, prayer, and singing. The volume also provides guidance on reading the Bible, selecting lessons, and weaving the day’s events into prayer. An extensive collection covers personal needs such as sickness and travel, as well as church, nation, and missionary concerns. The Anglican tone and emphasis on reading the Scriptures with family devotion reflect mid-Victorian piety and a practical approach to spiritual formation at home.
