A Scripture Help : Designed To Assist In Reading The Bible, Profitably — Edward Henry Bickersteth. The Christian Student is a didactic, devotional guide by a 19th-century Anglican clergyman that argues for a balanced, diligent approach to theological study and spiritual formation. It surveys the right relationship between knowledge and holiness, urges prayer, humility, and reliance on divine teaching, and lays out a program for students and ministers to enrich their understanding of Scripture while cultivating godliness. The work covers the usefulness of theological study, the role of practical works, how to read controversial writings, and outlines a history of divinity from the Fathers to modern writers. Emphasizing that true learning proceeds from the Word of God through the Spirit, it exhorts laypeople as well as clergy to search the Scriptures, grow in grace, and serve with charity and restraint in religious debate. It first seeks divine guidance through Scripture and prayer, then action in life.
