A Scripture Help : Designed to Assist in Reading the Bible, Profitably: Volume 3

A Scripture Help : Designed To Assist In Reading The Bible, Profitably by Edward Henry Bickersteth presents a devotional guide to the Lord's Supper. The work surveys the sacrament's origin, nature, and deeper theological meanings, tracing its appointment by Christ, the atonement, and the New Covenant, and explaining how faith, remembrance, and the design of the supper unite to nourish and strengthen believers. The text is divided into two parts: an extensive exegesis and reflection on the Lord's Supper itself, followed by instructions for preparation, self-examination, meditation, and the actual Anglican service and prayers associated with communion. It emphasizes the sacrament as a means of grace that feeds the soul, fosters sanctification, and cultivates communal fellowship among Christians, while offering numerous meditations, prayers, and hymns to guide devotion. The author also provides practical guidance for clergy and laity on approaching the table with reverence, gratitude, and a hopeful anticipation of Christ's coming. The volume functions as a comprehensive pastoral manual for devout and reflective Christian worship.
