xivpp introduction, xvi + 202 + 33pp + 4pp, 3 folding plates, small format (16cm x 10.5cm), teg, coloured endpapers, full green leather, a very good copy. Publisher: The first English book written solely for the gunner in the sea service, although it owes much to earlier works written for the land service, notably Bourne's The Art of Shooting in Great Ordnance (1578), Nye's Art of Gunnery (1670), the anonymous Compleat Gunner of 1672, and Binning's A Light to the Art of Gunnery (1689). It no doubt draws also on numerous manuscript Gunner's Notes deriving from the course of instruction operated by the Board of Ordnance which had been in operation for the previous 150 years.
