The Seaboard Parish: Volume 3

The Seaboard Parish by George MacDonald. The Seaboard Parish is a multi-volume Victorian novel that unfolds through the voice of a pious parson-narrator and his family along an English coast. In the excerpt, narrator Walton, his wife Ethelwyn, and their children Wynnie and Connie live a life of quiet faith, intimate nature-watching, and moral reflection. A guest, the young painter Percivale, becomes involved with Wynnie through conversations about art, truth, and the divine. The text juxtaposes serene scenes of moonlit downs and troubled seas with discussions about the cubicalness of nature, the design of Providence, and the relation of faith to daily life. A dramatic seaside storm, a shipwreck, and the subsequent funeral test the community’s duty, forgiveness, and belief in life beyond death. The Sermon chapters recount the gospel story of Lazarus and explore resurrection and hope as the heart of Christian life. Across these chapters, MacDonald blends nature, theology, and intimate family drama into a luminous meditation on life, duty, and the possibility of grace.
