Synopsis
IN SEARCH OF SILVER AND GOLD This is a story of a young man who graduated from High School and six days later enlisted in the Navy with a career in the Submarine force as his goal. He spent the first eleven years of his enlistment working his way up through the rating structure and qualified for his Silver (Enlisted) dolphins. He then achieved Officer rank and advanced through the ranks and qualified for his Gold (Officer) dolphins. Throughout his thirty-seven years of active service he continued to work toward a college degree while competing for those challenging billets that would help him obtain his goals. His billets included three operating diesel submarines, followed by being a member of the commissioning crews of a new Diesel submarine, two Nuclear Attack submarines, two Nuclear FBM Missile submarines and a catamaran Submarine Rescue ship. He also served on an Ammunition Supply ship and a Submarine Tender. Captain Doyle went to sea with Admiral Rickover on acceptance trials of each of the four nuclear submarines. He was the Bridge Phone Talker on the first two and was the Officer of the Deck on the second two. In Search of Silver and Gold chronicles Captain Doyle’s Navy career and highlights the life career decisions and life threatening events that arose throughout his thirty-seven year adventure!
About the Author
CAPTAIN W. JAMES DOYLE, U. S. NAVY (RET) Captain Doyle of Wellesley, Massachusetts, enlisted in the US Navy in June of 1948. He served tours of duty in four diesel submarines. The USS HARDER (SS 568) was his first, new construction submarine. His follow on tours were to the new construction crews of the USS SEAWOLF (SSN 575) and the USS SKIPJACK (SSN 585). Captain Doyle was commissioned on April 1, 1959 and subsequently served in commissioning crews of USS ALEXANDER HAMILTON (SSBN 617) (Blue) and USS HENRY L. STIMPSON (SSBN 655) (Blue). He then served a tour as Navigator and Operations Officer in USS SPINAX (SS 489). After Naval Deep Sea Diving School in 1970, Captain Doyle served as the Prospective Executive Officer of a new construction, catamaran submarine rescue vessel, USS PIGEON (ASR 21). In February 1974, he assumed command of PIGEON. He subsequently served tours as Executive Officer, USS DIXON (AS 37), as Chief Staff Officer for Commander Submarine Squadron Six and as Chief of Staff for Commander Submarine Group FIVE. His last tour of duty was as Deputy Commander Operational Test & Evaluation Force, Pacific. Captain Doyle is entitled to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (third award), and other unit and service awards. He is married to the former Esther Louise Baier of Bastress, Pennsylvania. They have three sons, eight grandchildren and one great-grand child.
