[ ABOUT THE BOOK ] Searching for Shakespeare Book by Tarnya Cooper | This book examines six contested portraits of William Shakespeare and investigates their authenticity, beginning with the Chandos portrait, presented to the newly founded National Portrait Gallery in 1856. Its analysis draws on scientific examination, including X-ray, infrared and ultraviolet imaging, macro and micro photography, and paint sampling. | Professors Stanley Wells and James Shapiro consider Shakespeare's personal and professional life, while curator Tarnya Cooper explores contemporary ideas about portraiture and Shakespeare's interest in the visual arts. Professor Marcia Pointon examines the later history of Shakespeare's image and its development into an icon of Englishness after his death. Illustrated with portraits, costumes, manuscripts and maps, the book also offers insights into the lives of Shakespeare's fellow actors, entertainers and playwrights, as well as his patrons and audiences.
