A guide to the plants and animals that may be found along the Atlantic shore from Maine to North Carolina.
Reviews:
Grade 3 Up Much more than a guide to collecting and identifying seashells, this is a pocket-sized introductory field guide to the life along the seashore. Commonly seen and relatively easy-to-find creatures and plants are described and drawn. Hansen includes descriptions of some live creatures which may be found on the beach, empty shells to collect, seaweeds which may have washed in, grasses and plants growing along the shoreline, and shore and sea birds. Excellent suggestions of what to wear (sneakers, but not your best), what to take (a friend), safety rules (watch out for undertow, slippery rocks, and the tides), and rules for protecting the environment (never collect live animals) are given. A seven-inch rule is marked on the back cover for measuring finds. Frances E. Millhouser, Prince William Library System, Va.
