Second Life Strategy: Rebuilding a Meaningful Life After Serious Injury or Illness

What do you do after you survive the worst day of your life-but the life you knew no longer fits?
After serious injury or illness, most people are handed treatment plans, appointment schedules, and vague encouragement to "stay positive." Very few are given a practical way to rebuild identity, structure, confidence, and direction once the crisis phase is over. Second Life Strategy is written for that unspoken next stage-the long, confusing aftermath where you may look "fine" on the outside but privately feel disoriented, exhausted, and unsure what your future is supposed to look like now.

Drawing on lived experience of catastrophic brain injury and years of work with people navigating major life disruption, Kurt McLaws offers a trauma-aware, non-medical framework for reintegration: the AGENCY Method. Instead of chasing the myth of "back to normal," you'll learn how to design a second life that is honest about limits and still serious about possibility.
Inside, you'll discover how to:

* Acknowledge the real break between your old life and your current reality-without collapsing into resignation.
* Ground in what your body, mind, and nervous system can actually handle now, instead of designing your days for a former version of you.
* Engineer new structures, routines, and supports that reduce friction and make life feel inhabitable again.
* Normalize setbacks, difficult emotions, and the "looks fine on the outside" problem so they stop feeling like personal failure.
* Claim agency in a changed reality, even when you cannot control symptoms, timelines, or other people's expectations.
* Yield forward into a meaningful second chapter built from who you are now-not who you used to be.

Second Life Strategy is especially for high-functioning, highly responsible people who were once "the capable one" for everyone else-and who now find that the same habits of pushing, overfunctioning, and powering through are quietly making recovery harder. It does not promise a cure or a neat seven-step comeback. Instead, it offers language, structure, and clear-eyed hope for building a life that is smaller in some ways, larger in others, and far more real.

If you're tired of trying to go "back" and ready to build something worthwhile from here, this book is your blueprint for a second life that you can actually live in.
