Second Series of Imaginary Conversations: Dialogues of Sovereigns and Statesmen. Five Dialogues of Boccaccio and Petrarca the Pentameron

Second Series Of Imaginary Conversations: Dialogues Of Sovereigns And Statesmen. Five Dialogues Of Boccaccio And Petrarca The Pentameron by Walter Savage Landor is a sweeping assemblage of imagined dialogues that probe politics, empire, religion, and culture through witty, often satirical debate among famous rulers, statesmen, and literary figures. Across its sections, the book juxtaposes moral arguments about governance with the practicalities and temptations of power, asking how states should balance reform, tradition, and strategic necessity. Notable pairings include Wellington with Sir Robert Inglis debating Indian policy and religious neutrality; Bishop Shipley with Benjamin Franklin weighing war’s costs and humane policy; Windham and Sheridan on Ireland’s union and church establishments; Louis XVIII and Talleyrand on post-Napoleonic diplomacy; Romilly and Wilberforce on abolition; and Admiral Blake with Humphrey Blake on duty and accountability. The Pentameron frame introduces Petrarch and Boccaccio in a dialogue about Dante, Virgil, and the craft of literary criticism, interwoven with satire and scholarly digression. The collection blends salon politics, courtroom and courtly scenes, and Renaissance literature to illuminate enduring questions about power, virtue, and the costs of empire.
