This is a beautiful team effort from an author and photographer recognized for their garden publications. A few of the Georgetown gardens featured are open to the public, but most are private and so will never be accessible to any but the favored few except through a book like this. And they are gardens well worth enjoying: each is the unique result of a love of gardens, expertise, hard work-and money. How many private gardens, for example, contain a mosaic by Marc Chagall? Featured are 27 gardens, with six to ten pages devoted to each. All the pictures are in glorious color, with both full-page panoramas and charming details. In prose as elegant as the pictures, Higgins gives the history of each house, tells something about its current owner, and credits the gardener or landscape architect responsible for the garden depicted.
