Reviews
Grade 7 Up In this volume from the Bronze Age of comics, one of DC's legendary heroes is revived for a new generation to discover. After a vicious attack, Alec Holland is badly seared by chemicals and tossed into a Louisiana swamp to die. It is there that he undergoes the change from man to Swamp Thing. As a doctor, Holland sought to end world hunger and tried to help those in need. As Swamp Thing, he still wishes to fulfill a heroic role, but many are so horrified by his hideous visage that they immediately attack him out of fear. Throughout this 10-chapter, highly episodic volume, he encounters a wide range of characters, from pacifist aliens to malicious werewolves to robot clones to the Dark Knight himself, Batman. With strong writing filled with vivid imagery and simile, coupled with crisp, bold art with a heavy reliance on primary colors, Swamp Thing is a story that will inspire its readers to think, long after the story is over. Originally published in 1972, this volume collects the first 10 issues of the original comics. In 2002, those issues were released as a trade paperback. This volume collects the same issues as the 2002 edition, but in a smaller digest size. With the lack of graphic violence or sex, and the strong story line, it is highly suited for most libraries with a strong superhero readership.
