While working as a pressman for The Toronto Star in July 1968, young Douglas and his wife Karen became parents - and their lives were forever changed. The arrival of daughter, Cheri-Anne, was little short of traumatic. Delivered weeks overdue, Cheri-Anne collapsed shortly after being born. She was in and out of hospitals for much of her young life. By age two, Cheri-Anne was diagnosed as severely mentally and physically retarded. Giving in to the medical opinion that she had only a few months to live, Douglas and Karen reluctantly acquiesced and Cheri-Anne was placed into an institution.
Douglas and Karen refused to give up hope, however, and they continued to pray that Cheri-Anne’s life could be saved. In 1975, their prayers were answered in the form of a "medical intuitive" whom fate brought into their lives. Douglas and Karen put aside their skepticism, doubts, and fears about intuitives and sought the advice of this "sleeping prophet."
