A Secular Essay; Containing A Retrospective View Of Events, Connected With The Ecclesiastical History Of England, During The Eighteenth Century With ... State Of Practical Religion In That Period

What truly changed in English religion between the early Hanoverian monarchs and the dawn of modern Britain? John Brewster's A Secular Essay offers a lucid, quietly passionate answer. Faith met politics in pulpits. Blending narrative history with pastoral reflection, Brewster traces the ecclesiastical history of England across the long eighteenth century, examining public events alongside the everyday realities of worship and belief. This religious history nonfiction work considers how the Church of England navigated controversy, complacency, and renewal, and what all this meant for practical Christian piety and the conscience of ordinary believers. Written by a thoughtful Anglican divine of the Georgian era church, it stands as both an accessible ecclesiastical history essay and a meditative guide to eighteenth century religious life in 18th century England. For church history students and for religious studies scholars, the volume offers a contemporaneous voice that enriches any anglican church history book shelf, classic Anglican theology collection, or church history study guide. General readers interested in church of england history and the texture of Georgian society will find a measured, humane companion to more strident narratives of the period. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
