SECURITY CAN'T BE AN AFTERTHOUGHT.
Connected devices are everywhere—from cars and industrial controllers to medical equipment, smart devices, and embedded Linux systems. As these products become more connected, the consequences of getting security wrong become more serious.
Secure by Design for Embedded Devices is a practical guide to building embedded products that are designed to resist attacks, protect sensitive systems, and remain secure throughout their operational lifetime.
Instead of treating security as a checklist or a final-stage review, this book shows you how to make security part of the engineering process from the beginning—from requirements and threat modeling through hardware, firmware, operating systems, communications, updates, and fleet operations.
You'll learn how the different layers of embedded security fit together and, more importantly, why each control matters, what it protects, and what can happen when it is missing.
INSIDE THIS BOOK, YOU'LL LEARN HOW TO:
- Build security requirements that are specific, testable, and traceable
- Translate frameworks such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act, MDR, IEC 62443, and ISO/SAE 21434 into practical engineering controls
- Apply threat modeling and risk assessment to embedded products
- Design secure boot chains using keys, signatures, rollback protection, and hardware roots of trust
- Harden embedded Linux and other operating environments by reducing attack surfaces and strengthening runtime protections
- Apply secure coding and isolation practices to embedded applications
- Protect keys, credentials, tokens, and other secrets in constrained environments
- Select and implement cryptographic mechanisms appropriate for embedded systems
- Secure device communications with TLS, mTLS, certificates, and device identity
- Harden SSH, web interfaces, custom protocols, and other network-facing services
- Design reliable and secure OTA update systems with authentication, integrity protection, rollback, recovery, and A/B architectures
- Build practical vulnerability management and SBOM processes using technologies such as SPDX and CycloneDX
- Monitor embedded fleets, design useful logging strategies, and prepare incident-response playbooks
- Apply security patterns specifically to automotive, medical, industrial, and IoT environments
- Manage device identity, configuration, compliance, and security throughout the entire product lifecycle
MORE THAN A SECURITY CHECKLIST
One of the biggest mistakes in embedded security is assuming that one technology can solve everything.
Secure boot does not compensate for an insecure application. Strong cryptography does not help if encryption keys are poorly protected. A hardened operating system does not eliminate vulnerabilities in the services running on top of it.
Real security comes from layers working together.
WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR
It is especially useful for:
- Embedded software and firmware engineers
- Embedded Linux developers
- Firmware and systems architects
- IoT engineers
- Embedded security engineers
- Automotive cybersecurity professionals
- Industrial and OT security engineers
- Medical-device engineering and security teams
- Technical leads and engineering managers
- Product managers responsible for connected devices
- Security professionals moving from enterprise IT into embedded systems
You don't need to be a dedicated security researcher to benefit from this book. What you need is a technical foundation and a desire to build products that are secure by architecture—not merely secure by intention.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
