“All models are wrong. Some are useful.” - George BoxThe Security Risk Management Aide-Mémoire is a book full of models and tools to help security professionals to brief clients, conduct security risk assessments, facilitate workshops, draft reports, and more. Much of it is from the Security Risk Management Body of Knowledge with some new material reflecting updates such as ISO31000:2018 Risk Management Standard. The book addresses all domains of security risk management but assumes you are already familiar with the contents and the specifics of your profession. The tools and models are complementary. Pick the ones that work best for you and ignore the rest or keep them in your back pocket for another day. You can read selected chapters and download the graphics and models for free from www.srmam.com
I've been working in security, risk management, and generalmanagement for a few decades. I've met somegreat people, seen and done some amazing things, and made acomfortable living along the way. But even I will admit that some of the work can be dull. Report writing especially, but also some of the reference documents, legislation, and the like which we have to be familiar with.
I've tried to make this book a bit more interesting by using some modern illustrations. The original illustrations were created piece by piece for specific needs. They usually started as PowerPoint graphics or Excel charts. And when I compiled the first draft of the book, it showed. Colors and styles that were all over the place. So, recognizing my own limitations as a graphic designer, I went to Upwork.com and with the assistance ofthe very talented Tanya Leontyeva (graphics) and Laeeq Hussain Arif (cover) the graphics are now much more consistent.
I've written elsewhere on what I've learned in developing my book writing process but happy to share what I've discoveredwhile writing five books so far. There are another dozen or more in the works soby then I'll hopefully have the hang of it. You be the judge.
And as for me, I like writing, motorcycling, hiking, travel, my wife andfamily, and just plain having adventures. Writing books seems like acompletely unnecessary risk to ones reputation and income, but thenagain so is motorcycling. :-)
