About the Author

Jean Paul wurde am 21.3.1763 in Wunsiedel (Fichtelgebirge) geboren. Sein Vater war Organist und Dorfpfarrer. Sein richtiger Name war Johann Paul Friedrich Richter. Er wuchs unter �rmlichen Verh�ltnissen auf. Er besuchte ab 1779 das Gymnasium in Hof, wo er bei seinen Gro�eltern lebte. 1781 bis 1784 studierte er Theologie und Philosophie in Leipzig. Die Bem�hungen, sein Studium durch Privatstunden zu finanzieren, scheiterten, er mu�te es wegen Armut abbrechen. Von 1790-1794 arbeitete er als Lehrer an der von ihm gegr�ndeten Elementarschule in Schwarzenbach, bis ihm der Erfolg seiner B�cher Unabh�ngigkeit vom reinen Broterwerb brachte. Er lebte von 1798-1800 in Weimar, wo erHerder, GoetheundSchillerbegegnete. Bis 1803 arbeitete er als Legationsrat in Meiningen, danach in Coburg und Bayreuth. Jean Paul erblindete 1824. Er starb am 14.11.1825 in Bayreuth.
