Select British Classics Volume 32

Select British Classics by The Author of The Mirror. The Mirror is an eighteenth-century English periodical consisting of letters, essays, and dialogues that explore manners, fashion, education, travel, and private life in Britain and Europe. Appearing under various playful pseudonyms and anonymous “correspondents,” the pieces present a collage of satirical critiques of fashionable society, country life, and the duties of virtue, often framed as letters to and from the magazine’s imagined editor. The selections embody the era’s interest in civility, moral improvement, gender roles, and the tension between refinement and genuine virtue, frequently juxtaposing metropolitan and provincial perspectives. Interwoven with reflective discussions on dreams, hospitality, and the social conduct of critics, the content reveals a panorama of 1779–1780 Edinburgh and London life, including debates on travel, education, good company, and the perils of luxury. The collection is a representative example of periodical literature that shaped public discourse on manners and morals in the late 18th century.
