About this title

Synopsis

"Select Charters and Other Illustrations of English Constitutional History" is a seminal collection of primary source documents that trace the foundational development of the English state and its legal framework. Spanning from the earliest periods of Germanic influence through the formative reign of Edward I, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the documents that shaped the English Constitution. Readers will find essential texts including royal charters, legislative acts, and administrative records that document the evolution of parliament, the judicial system, and the rights of the crown and the people.

Edited by the renowned historian William Stubbs and revised by H. W. C. Davis, this volume serves as an indispensable resource for students and scholars of medieval history and legal theory. It meticulously presents the evidence of institutional growth, offering deep insight into the transition from feudal customs to a structured constitutional monarchy. The collection highlights pivotal moments in governance, including the Magna Carta and the emergence of representative institutions, making it a cornerstone for understanding the origins of modern democratic principles and the rule of law in Great Britain.
