The editor has an eye for relations with both Quietuses, and we are given examples of cicero?s skill in the consolatory and commendatory genres: his cheerful social life under the dictatorship is strongly evoked, as is, more briefly, his vacillation in early 49 (?) and his grief for Tullia, with the embarrassing question of Public. (?) The book has the great advantage of Shackleton Bailey?s own text (for most of the letters) and a skeleton apparatus or ?textual notes? (ELIZABETH RAWSON in The Classical Review (New Series), 1981, pp.119-120).
