The Selected Letters of Mark Van Doren

Van Doren, Mark

These letters of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet deal almost exclusively with Van Doren's professional life, but that was a challenging life that embraced poetry, criticism, and teaching, all undertaken with courage and commitment. Most are written either to Van Doren's close friend Allen Tate or to his star pupil, John Berryman. Thomas Merton, Robert Frost, and Allen Ginsberg also appear regularly. The letters display an engaging blend of intellectual integrity and generosity that made generations of students cherish Van Doren's memory. Suitable for American literature collections.
