This volume covers the sixteen months from August 1925 to December 1926 when Govind Ballabh Pant was leader of the opposition in the U.P. Council. This was a somewhat lean period fro his party at the national level. In the central legislative assembly it had to contend with dissidence within its own ranks and the breakdown of the informal coalition of non official parties that had made successes over the government possible in 1924. What was worse was the wave of religious acrimony and violence sweeping Northern India. Pant was however able to hold his party together in the U.P. council ginger up members of the official bloc and speak knowledgeably and persuasively on the whole gamut of issues on provincial administration that came up for discussion. among the subjects he stressed were reduction of the burdens imposed on the peasantry by the landlords and government and the need for programmes of rural uplift. Pant had developed an urbane parliamentary style and though a consistent critic of lapses in the administration he won the respect of his political opponents.
