Richepin, whose acquiescence in the purpose of bringing some of the treasures of his works into accessible and educational form has so readily and repeatedly been given, and whose kindness has aided in the interpretation of certain points in this book, I beg to express my most grate ful appreciation of his authorization to prepare these selec tions from his so varied forms of literature.

Jean Richepin (1849-1926) est un poete, romancier et auteur dramatique francais. Fils d'un medecin militaire originaire de l Aisne, tres tot Richepin acquiert la reputation de - fort en theme - ce qui lui a permit de faire de brillantes etudes secondaires et d'integrer l'Ecole normale superieure en 1868, avant d'obtenir une licence es-lettres en 1870. Maniant les mots et les images aussi bien que certains manient les armes, il se fait vite remarquer en s imposant grace a ses joutes verbales. D un caractere enclin a l emportement d aucun dirait a la violence, a l exaltation et a un certain romantisme, Richepin demeure le maitre incontestable de son metier poetique fort de sa culture de normalien lettre. Considere de nos jours que comme un - tres grand rhetoricien -, certains de ces ecrits dressent un portrait au vitriol de la societe de son epoque dont leurs exactitudes constituent une richesse incommensurable.
