Grade 3-5–Written in frank, unflinching prose, these books feature engaging page layouts and easy-to-read texts that explain some of the most complicated episodes in national history. The authors avoid conjecture, relying instead on direct quotations and verifiable facts to create impact and breathe life into distant events. Reproductions, drawings, editorial cartoons, photographs, and newspaper clippings are scattered throughout. Particularly sensitive subjects like rape and hate language are handled with candor and clarity. Each book contains a section entitled "Things to Think About and Do." Very well done.–Catherine Threadgill, Charleston County Public Library, SC
