Singel faintly lined sheet. 16 x 10 cm. On the other side of the page "Seneca February 25, 1880 with list of items adding up to $10.50. Appears to be a page torn out of notebook recording transactions, purchases, etc. James Carver was George Washington Carver's older brother (by 5 years) who left the Carver family when he was about 12. He died of small pox in 1883 and was buried in or near Seneca, Missouri. It seems unlikely that GWC ever saw his brother after his departure although GWC did record learning of his death. We would like to believe that this is a remnant from the short life of GWC's brother but don't even know whether James was literate or whether this modest loan, repaid 9 months later, was made to him. We do know that James is thought to have been working as a plasterer in Seneca, Missouri, around 1880. Perhaps someone who knows more can enlighten us. In the meantime, this item is for sale.
