"Whatever years lie behind us are in death's hands." Seneca, Letter 1
Seneca was one of the richest men in Rome and the tutor and adviser of Nero. In the last years of his life, after stepping back from Nero's court, he wrote 124 letters to his friend Lucilius about the problems everyone still has: too little time, fear of what is coming, money, ambition, grief and other people. In AD 65 Nero ordered him to die. The letters survived, and they are among the most practical writing the Stoics left us.
Every day you put off living well is a day you do not get back. That is where Seneca starts, and Seneca Greatest Letters Explained takes you through the rest of it, one lesson at a time.
136 passages. 87 of his letters. 12 chapters. One lesson a day.
Every lesson gives you two pages:
- The passage, word for word from the public-domain Gummere translation, cited by letter so you can check it
- The interpretation: what Seneca actually meant, and where it applies in your life now
- Today's practice: one concrete thing to do about it before the day is over
Seneca did not always live up to his own advice, and this book says so where it matters. The gap between what he knew and what he did is where some of the most useful lessons are, because that gap is where most of us live too.
Inside, chapters on:
- Time and postponement
- Death, and what it takes
- Fear and anxiety
- Wealth and having enough
- Comfort and hardship
- Knowing yourself
- When no one is watching
- Work and ambition
- Friendship and other people
- ...and three more
Perfect for:
- Readers of Seneca's Moral Letters to Lucilius, also published as Letters from a Stoic, who want them explained
- Anyone who feels busy all the time and still behind on what matters
- People dealing with anxiety, loss or a hard change, who want a steadier mind
- Readers who want a daily Stoic practice, not just quotes
- A gift for graduations, birthdays, retirements and hard seasons
You will run out of time either way. Seneca's point is to stop wasting what is left.
Start with Day 1.
