Shirley was writing about the "Positive Aging Lifestyle" before most were even thinking about it. A mother of three, grandmother of ten and a great–grandmother of two, Shirley was raised in Alabama on a farm working with all her family members in the tenant cotton fields. Her favorite pastimes are her faith, spending time with family, and traveling and speaking all across the country! She is the author of ten books, including The Christian Writer's Desk Diary, The Beauty of Being God's Woman, and Spiritual Sparks for Busy Women. She is also columnist of the syndicated and online column "Fabulous after Fifty" and a featured columnist for Senior Lifestyle magazine. She hosts the weekly syndicated radio shows Aging Outside the Box and Aging Outside the Box Christian Spiritual Sparks.

She received the 1997 Woman of Achievement Award from the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Most Stunning Smile Award at the 2000 Ms. Senior Alabama Pageant, and, most recently, the 2004 Citizen of the Year Award from the Albertville Chamber of Commerce.
