Sent to War, Returning for Peace by Chuck Bechtel is a memoir intertwining the author's experience as a draftee during the Vietnam War and his journey back to Vietnam decades later. It recounts his upbringing, military training, and combat experiences as an infantry platoon leader. The narrative delves into the disillusionment of soldiers during the war, the societal backlash they faced upon returning home, and the challenges of reintegration.
The book is also a story of healing and reconciliation, highlighted by the author's return trip to Vietnam with a group of veterans organized by Mrs. Lei Williams, a woman whose life was deeply impacted by the war. It explores themes of love, sacrifice, camaraderie, and the lingering effects of war, offering a reflective perspective on history and the enduring quest for peace.
