A Sentimental Journey Through France & Italy in a fine binding by Anthony Gardner OBE

This is a copy of Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey Through France & Italy which has been expertly bound by the renowned bookbinder Anthony Gardner. The book is the limited edition published by Peter Davies in 1927 and illustrated by Vera Willoughby. Apart from mild foxing throughout, the book is very good internally but the purple binding has faded to brown along its extremities. The rear board has what appears to be a water stain to its top area (see photos). The binder’s apologia is dated Easter 1973, numbered 988, and refers to part of the design being that used by him in 1950 to bind ceremonial copies of programmes used by the French President and his wife in 1950.
