Series A.I.M Percussion Text, Volume 3: Mallets, Meters & Multiple Percussion

Mallets, Meters & Multiple Percussion expands the horizons of percussion by tracing European, African, and Asian influences on the evolution of modern ensembles. This essential volume guides readers through the history, function, and performance of mallet percussion-from timpani and bass drum to gongs, cymbals, marimba, and orchestral bells-supported with illustrations and musical excerpts that bring each instrument to life.

Building on this foundation, the book explores rhythmic structure in depth, covering syncopation, odd and changing meters, metric modulation, phasing, polymeters, and polyrhythms. Clear examples show how these concepts translate across traditions and adapt seamlessly to the Western drum set.

The final section turns to multiple percussion, presenting innovative set-ups that combine instruments and cultures into dynamic performance systems. With orchestral excerpts, notation guidance, and practical strategies for interpretation, students and professionals alike will find tools to expand their artistry.

Far more than a manual, this volume is an invitation to exploration-equipping percussionists to design, adapt, and discover new treasures at every corner of the rhythmic world.
