A Sermon On 2 Chron. VI. 41 Preached November 19, 1828, At The Dedication Of The Pleasant Street Church In Portsmouth — Israel Warburton Putnam. This sermon, delivered at the dedication of the Pleasant Street Church in Portsmouth, reflects on Solomon's dedication of the Temple and applies its petitions to the modern church. It presents three main petitions from Solomon’s prayer: that God would enter the temple as his resting place with the ark of strength; that the priests be clothed with salvation; and that the saints rejoice in goodness. The preacher emphasizes the necessity of the Holy Spirit’s presence in worship, the need for ministers to be faithful and sanctified, and the joy produced by true religion within the sanctuary. He traces the local history of Congregational churches in Portsmouth, discusses religious liberty and revival, and concludes with exhortations to support and sustain the new church, to seek a godly ministry, and to live in a manner worthy of the gospel.
