About this Item

Pamphlet, disbound from a larger work. Lacking any wraps that were issued. 47 pp. Title page and pages through page 6 DETACHED. A lengthy speech on what Parker terms 'the merchant class' of America, critiquing their quest for power and money at the expense of others, especially those who work as laborers. Parker includes a discussion of the use of slavery and its ills in the United States and Europe, including its benefits to the aforementioned merchants. Theodore Parker was a preacher, Transcendentalist and abolitionist, and considered controversial for his criticism of many aspects of the bible, including miracles, as well as for his ardent anti-slavery stance in which he advocated violating the Fugitive Slave Act. Parker was indicted but not convicted of harboring fugitive slaves. FAIR condition with the title page and pages through page 6 DETACHED. Moderate browning and a few small stains/spotting present. Pencil note on the upper front cover. Bookseller Inventory # 010443
