A Sermon Preached Before The King. On Sunday, March 22, 1752: Drawn Up For The Use Of Their Royal Highnesses George Prince Of Wales, And Prince Edward. By Thomas Lord Bishop Of Norwich, Preceptor. Thomas Hayter. Thomas Hayter's sermon addresses the responsibilities of high status and the dangers of worldly wealth, pleasures, and power. Drawing on Christian scripture, it argues that all worldly things are indifferent in themselves and become blessings or curses only by how they are used. The preacher warns that life is a short state of trial and urges a vigilant, measured use of riches, pleasure, and authority in service of virtue and duty. He advocates moderation, charity, and benevolent action toward the needy, and he urges listeners to imitate Christ's active goodness rather than reclusive piety. By examining human nature and the governance of God, the sermon promotes a practical piety that aligns everyday conduct with divine wisdom, promising true happiness through virtuous living and the hope of eternal rewards. It also emphasizes the obligation to fulfill one's station in society and to treat others with kindness and fairness.
