A Sermon Preached at the Installation of Adams Ayer, as Associate Pastor of the Unitarian Society in Charlestown, N. H., June 7, 1855 (Classic Reprint

Historical sermon on ministry, fellowship, and church life delivered at an 1855 installation. This edition presents Henry W. Bellows’s address alongside the installation rites and reflections on spiritual character, pastoral duties, and the relationship between ministers and their congregations. It offers a window into mid-19th-century Unitarian thought on leadership, community, and faith in action.

The text foregrounds the minister’s inner life and spiritual formation as the foundation of effective service. It also discusses the balance between personal integrity and public responsibilities, as well as how ministers relate to lay members and to the broader church body. Readers will encounter practical reflections on preaching, pastoral care, and the renewal of religious life within a community.

• Insights on personal character, prayer, study, and how these shape preaching and leadership.

• Thoughts on the duties of a minister toward sorrow, illness, and dying, and toward the wider congregation.

• Discussion of church fellowship, membership, and the balance between ritual practice and spiritual truth.

• Contexts of a formal installation, with sections titled Right Hand of Fellowship, the Charge, and concluding prayers.

Ideal for readers of 19th-century religious history, Unitarian thought, and those exploring the social roles of clergy in historical ceremonies.
