Good clean copy with some very minor browning on some of the pages. Contains a frontispiece portrait of Bishop Brownrig (engraved by William Faithorne). The first sentence of each sermon begins with a capital letter set against a floral background. Each collection of sermons is preceded by a listing of the sermons included in the volume. Bound in contemporary calf; the spine has been repaired with brown tape. The first volume contains forty sermons and title page to the first volume is a reprint of an earlier edition published in 1674 second. The tile page to the second volume is dated 1685. The 1674 edition was also published in two volumes: one containing 40 sermons and the second containing 25 sermons. The inside front board contains a bookplate marked "The Revd. J. Withers, M.A. 1748" and the notation "JK 1712" is written on the inside front page and on the reverse of the portrait. A similar notation ("JK 1717") also occurs on the inside front page.
Ralph Brownrig (1592-1659) was the Bishop of Exeter and the volumes were published posthumously from his pages of notes discovered by his friend William Martyn. It was not Brownrig's intent to have the material published but he was held in such high esteem by other clergy that Martyn decided to proceed with the publication of the material. The first volume contains a letter of dedication and explanation to King Charles II. The second volume contains a letter of dedication and explanation to Gilbert, Archbishop of Canterbury.
