Service Afloat: Comprising the Personal Narrative of a British Naval Officer, During the Late War

Service Afloat: Comprising The Personal Narrative Of A British Naval Officer, During The Late War. Service Afloat is a first-person memoir detailing the life of a British naval officer during the Napoleonic era, covering two volumes in one and spanning both European and Caribbean theaters. The narrative follows a young midshipman’s progression from the East India Company service through dangerous voyages, battles, and blockades on ships ranging from Indiamen to sloops, including dramatic episodes off the Cape, in Canton, and in the West Indies. It recounts arduous voyages, fierce storms, press-gangs, mutinies, catamaran ventures, and the perilous invasions around Boulogne, as well as the exploits against French and Spanish forces in Martinique, Guadaloupe, St. Vincent, and Port Royal. Interwoven are reflections on discipline, leadership, prize-taking, health and endurance, and a notable meditation on slavery and emancipation in the Caribbean. The work blends nautical adventure, historical context, and personal witness to the trials and triumphs of naval life during the late war.
