A survey of pistols and revolvers used by the military and police since the middle of the 19th century. While the emphasis is European, examples from Canada, Japan, and the United States are included. Rather than giving a comprehensive survey, this concentrates on those weapons in service or on trial that are of particular interest to collectors. The black and white photos are from both sides in the same scale and are lighted to highlight detailing of each piece. Each weapon is accompanied by the usual technical information, and some have additional cross-sectional drawings and accessories. The ammunition is coded to another section of the book, which contains photos of the rounds, descriptions, etc. There are also sections on commemorative weapons and care of a handgun collection. Primary interest for this book will probably be in the area of history of technology and among collectors.
