La notion de service public a acquis une place singuli�re en devenant, au XXi�me si�cle, embl�matique du mod�le fran�ais de l'Etat : ligne de d�marcation entre le public et le priv�, elle est l'incarnation d'un Etat pr�pos� � la satisfaction des besoins collectifs. Les services publics jouent un r�le structurel et structurant dans la soci�t� fran�aise : ossature de la vie collective autant que garants de l'acc�s de tous � certains bien essentiels, ils ont �t� con�us comme un instrument privil�gi� d'int�gration et de coh�sion sociale. Cette conception a �t� �branl�e au cours des derni�res d�cennies par la d�r�gulation n�olib�rale. Mais si la r�duction du p�rim�tre des services publics s'est accompagn�e d'une banalisation de leur statut au nom d'un imp�ratif d'efficacit�, le service public n'en est pas devenu pour autant une notion vide de sens. Dans cet ouvrage, Jacques Chevallier entend d�crypter les diff�rentes significations de la conception fran�aise du service public et analyser sa dynamique actuelle.
