Serving from the Heart Leader Guide Revised/Updated: Finding Your Gifts and Talents for Service

God’s plan for the church calls for each member of the Body of Christ to play a vital role. Sometimes we think that serving God is an obligation, a duty, and that it isn’t meant to be enjoyable. The truth is, though, that God wants us to find joy and fulfillment when we serve. That happens when we serve in a role that matches who God created us to be.

In this updated edition of Serving from the Heart, church members will take a 6-week journey of self-discovery as they learn more about how the Body of Christ is intended to function, and what that means to each person.

This study (also workable in 7 Sunday School sessions) leads adults through assessing their spiritual gifts, talents and abilities, resources, individual style, dreams and experiences…all adding up to an enhanced capacity to serve God and neighbor.

Carol Cartmill is Executive Director of Adult Discipleship at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. In this role, she applies her passion for equipping people for ministry, practical experience from working in the local church, and an educational background in organizational management and leadership. She launched the spiritual gifts development program at COR in 1998. She and her husband Jim have raised two daughters and reside in Overland Park, Kansas. Carol is the co-author of Serving from the Heart, Leadership from the Heart, Leadership Essentials, and Serving from the Heart for Youth. She has led workshops relating to equipping ministries on both the local and national level.

Yvonne Gentile is the Guest Experience and ShareChurch Lead Director at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. Before joining church staff in 2011, Yvonne worked in an executive leadership capacity in retail, where she discovered the power of radical hospitality. She has been part of Resurrection since 1996 and served in numerous volunteer roles at Resurrection until 2011, when she joined the staff team, including leading the Spiritual Gifts Team, the Leadership Development team, and serving on the Committee on Nominations. She has led workshops and teaching events nationally on spiritual gifts, leadership development, building exceptional teams, volunteer management best practices, and radical hospitality. She is co-author of several books, including Serving from the Heart, Leadership from the Heart, and Leadership Essentials.
