Together with clinicians and researchers, Preston (You Can Beat Depression, Impact Pubs., 1989) here presents a succinct, readable account of brief psychotherapy. The authors assert that brief therapy encourages clients to take action, perhaps in homework assignments, journals, or self-ratings. Although brief therapy does not "cure," it does provide support, facilitate growth, and increase coping skills, leading clients from destructive to adaptive thought patterns. The authors discuss phases that aim to find a focus or problem and subsequently refocus the problem realistically. The book is similar to Harold Bloomfield's Making Peace with Yourself (Ballantine, 1985).
