A collection of rare proof sheets and printed lectures relating to Stanley's expedition to provide aid to the Emin Pasha, undertaken from 1887-1889, with numerous handwritten corrections. Stanley returned to England in 1890 to much fanfare and immediately embarked on a lecture tour of the U.K. and America. His famous account of the expedition, In Darkest Africa, was published the same year, and incorporates much of the material in these lectures. Comprising: Proof sheets of a lecture delivered before the Scottish Geographical Society in June 1890. Labeled "first proof 4.6.90", 29 pp, with multiple corrections and deletions, 4to, London: printed by William Clowes and Sons, [1890] Proof sheets of same lecture, also labeled "first proof 4.6.90", but 39 pp, and with only two annotations, 4to, London: printed by William Clowes and Sons, [1890] Proof sheets of same lecture, 35 pp, no annotations, seems to be the final version (page count corresponds to entry at BL) but without title sheet, 4to, London: printed by William Clowes and Sons, [1890] "Across Africa and the Rescue and Retreat of Emin Pasha", 45 pp, hewing closely to the above but ending with a 10 pp section not in the above addressing the rear column controversy; within two cover sheets bearing imprint New York: printed for the author by J.J. Little & Co., 1890, not in OCLC, apparently unpublished Proof sheets for a lecture titled, "The Great Forest of Central Africa; Its Cannibals and Pigmies", 45 pp, with corrections in pencil on 25 pages, 4to, London: printed by William Clowes and Sons, [1890]. String bound proofs. Foxing to some sheets and occasional edgewear, otherwise fine. Housed in cloth backed paper folders and laid into morocco backed clamshell case.
