Synopsis

The year 2015 represented for decades a landmark and a critical year for water and sanitation in the international agenda. Worldwide discussion covered many transversal aspects impacting on water governance, from climate change to financiality. Highlights of these high-level fora include: the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015 in New York, USA; the 7th World Water Forum that took place from 12 to 17 April 2015 in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, Republic of Korea entitled “Water for Our Future;” and the end of the UN Water for Life Decade 2005–2015. Throughout the major 2015 meetings, proceedings, and conclusions, we can see that water has really switched from a “sectoral” topic to a transversal one. It is now broadly accepted that water governance needs better policy and regulatory frameworks because it includes influences and needs to be influenced by all the other spheres of policy and development. Water problems will not be solved through strict and narrow technical perspectives, and there is a need for more holistic and sustainable management, integrating new approaches and new tools. With this third issue of New Water Policy and Practice Journal we aim to contribute to the water community some new thinking and debate, building from four articles written by young and promising water researchers. We hope that this third issue of New Water Policy and Practice Journal may showcase the need for broader involvement of stakeholders to consolidate a cross-cutting approach to water governance in different regions of the world and that 2016 will bring us all inspiration and insights to support that change. We welcome any of your contributions to keep feeding this crucial debate towards better water governance through broader involvement of different actors and stakeholders in the future.
