Seven for a Secret (Paperback)

Mara Voss believes in numbers.

As an insurance claims analyst, she has built her life around facts, routines, and probabilities. Numbers are predictable. Numbers don't accuse. And numbers certainly don't follow you home.

Then seven ravens appear during her lunch break.

They sit in a perfect row, unnaturally still. Six are black-eyed. The seventh watches Mara through a milky, clouded eye.

Hours later, the same seven ravens are waiting on the hood of her car.

Mara tries to dismiss the encounters as coincidence, but the birds keep appearing. At work. Outside her apartment. In places where they shouldn't be. And always there are seven.

Their presence begins stirring memories Mara has worked hard to bury-especially one insurance claim she denied months earlier. A house fire. A family named McKenzie. Seven people dead.

The deeper Mara digs into the old file, the harder it becomes to hide behind policy language and statistics. What she once considered a defensible business decision begins to look very different when measured against the lives that were lost.

And the ravens are still waiting.

As Mara's carefully ordered world begins to unravel, she becomes convinced that the birds want something from her. An acknowledgment. A confession. Perhaps even payment for a debt she never realized she owed.

But admitting the truth may not be enough.

Because six ravens might be willing to leave.

The seventh has other plans.

Seven for a Secret is a dark supernatural tale of guilt, consequence, and the terrible persistence of the things never acknowledged.

Roger left the southern mountains of West Virginia and joined the Air Force during the Viet Nam era. He traveled extensively, but his heart remained in the south. His writings reflect the southern attitude from those years ago.

After receiving an MBA in International Business, Roger worked for many years in the corporate world. He is an adjunct business instructor for a local university and a fulltime author and artist. His stories usually have backgrounds and characters that exist in a simpler time. No cell phones or other electronics distract his characters from experiencing the full adventure of just living.
