DOMENECH, Emmanuel H. Seven Years' Residence in the Great Deserts of North America. London, 1860. Two volumes. xxiv, 445; xii, 465pp. plus many lithographic plates (some tinted), and colored folding map. Leaf of ads in each volume. Original gilt cloth. A couple of corners slightly bumped. Frontispiece in volume one detached. Small tear to map. Bright handsome set. 19th-century school prize bookplate. Very good. Howes D-410. Wagner-Camp 356:1. Wheat Transmississippi 1008. Graff 1121. Pilling 1061. Abbey 664. Clark III:33305. Sabin 20554. Although Domenech visited the Southwest, he has never been granted much credence as an observer. The plates and maps are largely lifted from other sources, and the author has been criticized for his inaccuracy as an ethnologist. Still, this is an interesting narrative of travels, including much material on the Indians of the region. Wheat finds this map of interest for its marking of the Oregon Trail.
