Although traumatic brain (TBI) can happen to anyone, most of the people who suffer TBI are otherwise healthy and sexually active. Symptoms vary widely in severity and type and can include baffling, disturbing changes in sexual behavior and function.
Rehabilitation can help most survivors to regain some or all of their former lives, roles, and abilities, including sexuality and sensuality. At the same time, recovery can be slowed or derailed by problems in sexual function and behavior. Every member of the rehabilitation team needs to understand these problems and their impact. But what about the TBI survivor, and his or her families and partners? They need to know: What is TBI? What is the brain's role in sexuality and sexual development?
