In the Shadow of Suribachi

A story of the Greatest Generation. Told as fiction, it is a compilation of the stories the author heard from her father and interviews with veterans who fought at Iwo Jima. She takes the characters from pre-war days through the war to the present. She successfully captures the horror of young boys sent to war and caught in a hellish battle.

In a way, Joyce Faulkner began writing this book when she was a child and her father suffered a nervous breakdown. Twelve years after the Battle of Iwo Jima, the stress of those thirty-six days haunted his days and nights. He couldn't eat or sleep and he couldn't articulate exactly what was bothering him. It surfaced in dropped snippets told out of context. As Faulkner grew up, she began to understand his broken heart and his grief for friends lost forever. As she pondered his converations and his life, she knew that someday she would have to tell the story. "In the Shadow of Suribachi" is Faulkner's second book. Her well-received collection of short fiction is title "Losing Patience."
